Premenstrual Syndrome

The prostaglandin-balancing effects of the GLA in EPO are useful in alleviating PMS. The symptoms of PMS are believed to be caused by an alteration in prostaglandin activity caused by fluctuating hormone levels in the second half of the menstrual cycle. Although this hormonal fluctuation is normal, it may become exacerbated and unbalanced in some women due to: dietary inadequacies; genetic factors affecting the body's ability to convert LA to GLA; or simply the unique nature of each woman's reproductive cycle. Supplementing with an oil rich in GLA can help to restore balance. GLA supplements may help alleviate such symptoms as breast 
tenderness, cramping, headaches, and mood swings.

In one clinical study, 61 percent of women with PMS experienced remission of their symptoms 
after taking a course of GLA supplements.


Rheumatoid Arthritis

RA is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting joint tissue and causing stiffness and pain. Many prescription anti-inflammatory drugs can provide relief, but serious, long-term, adverse effects can be a problem. 
Supplements containing GLA have been shown to be beneficial in a number of studies. In one trial, 37 patients received either 1.4 grams daily of GLA supplements or a placebo. Those treated with GLA reported considerable reduction in joint tenderness and swelling, while those treated with placebo reported no improvement.

Eczema

Eczema is a condition in which the skin becomes dry, red, scaly, and intensely itchy. Patients with severe eczema report a burning sensation in affected areas. There are many types of eczema, but the type that appears to respond best to GLA supplementation is an inherited form known as atopic dermatitis. Conventional treatments for atopic dermatitis include oral 
and topical (applied directly to the skin) steroids, but these can have long-term adverse effects. Several studies have shown an overall improvement, especially relief from itching, in patients using GLA. In some cases, patients were able to reduce or eliminate their dependence on steroid drugs.
